Different Teeth Whitening Methods- Which one to choose?

Teeth Whitening MilwaukeeTeeth whitening is a relatively straightforward procedure that can have dramatic effects on a patients smile and self-esteem. With so many products on the market and different methods available, it can be confusing which one to choose for ourselves. Let’s review what options are out there before we make that decision.

Tooth whitening can be done in a dental office setting or at home. Differences between professional dental whitening and take home kits are the concentration of the whitening solutions used in the products. The stronger concentrations require less time to achieve the whitening effect and the strongest whitening systems are used in dental offices because they require the procedure to be done under professional supervision. These procedures are often done in a single appointment. On the other hand, over-the-counter (OTC) products are available for everyone, the concentration of whitening solution is not as strong, and therefore, the process takes longer to complete.

For maximum results, we strongly encourage patients to have their teeth cleaned professionally prior to whitening.

Zoom – In-Office Teeth WhiteningTeeth Whitening Milwaukee

The Zoom Whitening system utilizes a powerful whitening gel that can quickly and effectively whiten patient’s teeth. Tissue barriers are required because tissue and gum isolation is crucial to minimize irritation. Once the tissue barrier is on, whitening gel is applied to the teeth and the ZOOM LIGHT® (advanced blue LED technology) is used to activate the whitening gel. Adjustable settings of light intensity are available to ensure each patient receives a comfortable, positive whitening experience. After 15 minutes, the gel is removed, a new one is applied, and the cycle is repeated. Up to 4 cycles can be done per visit. If the patient experiences sensitivity during or after the procedure, they are provided with whitening trays filled with Relief ACP®, a pain relieving gel provided by Phillips™. These custom trays should be worn for 15 minutes, immediately after a Zoom procedure.

The Zoom Whitening procedure usually takes about 1.5 hours. Impressions of maxillary and mandibular arches are taken so that custom whitening trays can be fabricated for patients to take home. Patients will also receive whitening gel for future touch ups.

Take Home Teeth Whitening

For this type of whitening, patients come into the office for impressions, which are then used to make custom fit trays. Within a few days, patients can pick up their whitening trays and gel. At home, patients insert gel into the trays, which are then put into the mouth for various amounts of time, depending on the product they are using. In order to acquire the desired shade, patients need to repeat the procedure several times.

There are pros and cons to this type of treatment. While it can be done at the patient’s convenience, it takes longer to achieve the goal and sensitivity may be present until the treatment is completed.

Over the Counter Products

Whitening Quote 2There are several different types of OTC whitening products ranging from whitening toothpastes to whitening strips that are applied to the teeth. OTC products can be done without dental professional supervision, but they contain a lower concentration of whitening solution when compared to professional whitening systems. Therefore, to achieve a maximum whitening goal, the OTC products require the most time.
